Father Of The Bride Speeches
Step 3: completing the first draft
Now that you’ve written your welcome, brainstormed ideas for the body of your speech, and written the toast it’s time to expand what you already to have to complete the first draft of your speech. By the end of this stage your speech will still require some polish, but everything you need to say will be contained in it.
When you were in the brainstorming stage you wrote down ideas about your daughter and how proud of her you are; some words about her future husband; and what you think they will gain from marriage and now you need to expand these ideas into sentences.
Depending on how much material you have you may like to tell some kind of story about your daughter to illustrate your pride in her, but most of the guests will know something about her life and so will be able to relate to what you tell them. You may use humor if you feel like it, but also bear in mind that you may feel quite emotional while giving the speech and so allow for that if you think you may be affected.
Whatever you say, make it heartfelt. You don’t have to say too much if you don’t feel like it, but do ensure you make sure your daughter knows how you feel about her. Just a line or two about your future son-in-law are more than adequate and in addition to saying something about him, also welcome him into your family.
Finally you can speak about anything you think is appropriate, although sticking to the theme of marriage makes sense. Make sure you don’t talk too long here or your speech will get bogged down, but don’t worry if you don’t have much to say either.
You’ve already written the toast, so your first draft of your speech is now complete. All you need to do now is practice it and polish the words and shortly you’ll have the final version ready for the wedding day.
