Best Man Speeches
How to triumph at your best man speech
The best man’s speech is easily the most anticipated of the wedding speeches, and as a result is the cause of anxiety to almost everyone who is honored in role of best man. However, as with many things in life, a little planning will put you on the right foot to deliver a best man speech that will be remembered for all the right reasons.
You don’t need to start planning it months in advance, but give yourself a few weeks rather than the night before. This process won’t take you long, but often you’ll find that “sleeping on it” will help your creativity no end.
First of all you need to remember that best man speeches are about the groom, so start to think about what you know about him, thing like:
- What do you like about him?
- What irritates you about him?
- What irritates him?
- What do you have in common?
- How did you meet?
Just write down all ideas, brainstorming rather than trying to make any sense of what you think until you don’t have anything more. Now, put down you list and leave it for a day or so and then go back and see what you can add.
That’s it, brainstorming over.
Once you’ve got all your ideas, take a look through and see if there is an amusing anecdote that emerges. Remember that it should be clean, and needs to be suitable for both the bride and her parents!
Your story doesn’t need to be completely true, but it should be based on fact and needs to be something that the wedding guests can relate to the groom. Embellish your story by all means to make it funnier, but also remember that wedding guests will laugh at almost anything remotely amusing – they want to enjoy the day.
When it comes to the intro you may be expected to thank the bride and groom on behalf of the bridesmaids for his words – you’ll need to coordinate here to make sure he is going to thank you and the bridesmaids. As part of the introduction you should also let people know who you are and how you met the groom, before getting into the body of your speech.
And don’t forget to say something complimentary about the bride!
You shouldn’t have spent more than a couple of hours maximum to get that far and with a bit of practice your speech is ready for the big day. Once your speech is in good shape start to practice it and for this you need to say it aloud. Change it where it sounds unnatural and really get it polished. Once you are completely happy with it, cut it down to note form and put it on cards. That’s it; you’re ready to give your best man speech.
One the day, try and relax. Don’t worry if you do feel nervous, because most people are when speaking in public. But if you have prepared yourself well, you’ll quickly relax once you start speaking, especially if you start with a joke so that everyone laughs – there really is nothing like an appreciative audience to boost your confidence.
And that’s all there really is to giving a great best man speech that will earn you praise from all.
